This match brought the final series against the Kyiv side to a close. Athletic fought to the last in every game of the tie, and even in the closing home match the team stood level with the reigning champion, falling by only a single goal. The road to the final ran through play-off series won with authority, and reaching the deciding contest for gold was itself a historic achievement for the club.
